With a population of 10.6 million (34.5 million in the metropolitan area), Jakarta has a population density of 15,952 people per km². The greater Jakarta metropolitan area extends to 6,392 km².

Jakarta has a history stretching back to 1527. The city is renowned for National Monument Monas, Istiqlal Mosque, Kota Tua old town, and Ancol Dreamland.

Jakarta has a tropical monsoon climate, with summer temperatures averaging 28°C and winters around 27°C. The city's main public transit system is the Jakarta MRT.
